A first-timer's guide to Kerala's backwaters

Houseboat or homestay, Alleppey or Kumarakom, one night or two. The backwaters reward a bit of planning, and punish the default choices.
The Kerala backwaters are one of those destinations where the most heavily marketed option is not always the best one. A little context helps.
Alleppey vs Kumarakom
Alleppey has the density of canals and the larger houseboat fleet. Kumarakom is quieter, sits on Vembanad lake, and suits travellers who want a resort base rather than a moving one. Neither is objectively better - they are different trips.
One night is usually enough
Houseboats moor for the night by around 5:30pm and do not move again until morning, so a second night adds less than people expect. We generally pair one houseboat night with a village homestay instead.
The canoe is the part people remember
Houseboats cannot enter the narrow canals where daily village life actually happens. A two-hour shikara or dugout canoe ride costs very little and is consistently the highlight travellers mention afterwards.
