Ladakh has a short season and a lot of misinformation around it. Here is what actually opens when, and why June is not automatically the right answer.
When people ask about the best time to visit Ladakh, they usually mean two different questions at once: when are the roads open, and when is the weather pleasant. Those have different answers.
Road access
The Manali-Leh and Srinagar-Leh highways typically open between late May and early June, depending on snow clearance. Khardung La and Chang La are cleared earlier but can close at short notice after summer snowfall. If your itinerary depends on a specific pass, build in a buffer day.
Weather by month
June through September is the practical window. July and August bring the warmest days but also the highest crowds and occasional flash floods on the Zanskar side. September is quieter, clearer, and colder at night - our own preference.
Altitude, not weather, is the real constraint
Leh sits at roughly 3,500 metres. Whatever month you choose, plan two full days of acclimatisation before attempting any high pass. Every itinerary we run to Ladakh has this built in, and it is the single most common thing rushed trips get wrong.
